Throwing a Cocktail Reception

Blog / Throwing a Cocktail Reception

If you're looking for a reception that's fun, sophisticated, and not as formal as a seated dinner, a cocktail reception may be a good alternative. These parties are usually about three hours and can be a great way to still celebrate with friends and family without a long, drawn-out affair that is more formal.
During the first hour, waiters will welcome guests with trays of wine and champagne. Bartenders can be set up to offer mixed drinks. Serves will pass around hors d'oeuvres. These are usually very light. One or two food stations can be set up to serve things such as sushi, samosas, and bruschetta. The newlyweds will be announced and the receiving line will take place. The couple will also have their first dance.
In the second hour, small plates of more substantial food such as mini filet mignon with potatoes gratin, duck breast on wild-rice cakes, and coconut chicken skewers can be passed around and offered at stations. About fifteen minutes into the hour, the host and or the bride or groom can make a welcome speech. This can be followed by toasts. Dancing can begin.
During the third hour, the food stations should close but the bar should remain open. The newlyweds can cut the wedding cake at this time. Waiters can pass bite-size sweets such as lemon bars and truffles then pass around plates of the cake. Coffee and tea should also be served at this time. The reception will end with the bride tossing her bouquet and the last dance taking place.
