Writing your own wedding vows is a trend that is making a big come-back with brides and grooms. This can be a beautiful way to personalize the ceremony and express how you feel about each other in front of your loved ones.
The first thing you want to do when writing your own vows is to acknowledge the significance of the day. You can make this either light or heavy by saying something such as, "Taking this leap into the future is the surest thing I've ever done," or "I'm honoured that you are standing here making this commitment with me today."
Saying something about the time you two dated is also a nice touch to the vows. After all, that is how you two came to this day so it's important to note it. You can make it very specific, "Your humour made grad school bearable," or something very general such as "Having you as an anchor allowed me to take risks I've never dreamed of."
It's also important to mention at least one thing that you particularly love about that person such as how they turn grocery shopping into an adventure or how they are a great listener. There are sure to be thousands of things you love about the person. Pick the ones that mean the most to you.
Then look to the future. After all, that's what this day is all about. Talk about what you hope your life will be like together and how much you are looking forward to it.
Finish off with a promise. Again, that's what this day is all about. You can make it very serious or you can finish it off lightly saying something such as, "I vow to keep you laughing for the next fifty years."
Whatever you end up saying in your vows, it will be perfect because only you truly know what's in your heart and what that special person and the big day means to you. Try to relax. Writing your own vows can be very nerve-wracking but it's totally worth it to add some most memorable moments to your big day!
