Eloping didn't used to be as popular as it is today. Couples running away together to get married played second fiddle to having a large wedding with all of the bride's and groom's family and friends. Eloping has become an explosive trend in the world of weddings today but it has come with the modern twist of planning a destination wedding.
Destination weddings are like eloping in that the couple do go away somewhere to get married. The difference is that they will often bring a few of the their closest family members and friends to share in the event with them. Destination weddings are also sometimes called "honeymoon weddings" as the couple will be spending some time at the destination to enjoy their honeymoon as well.
This way of getting married seems to becoming so popular due to the fact that couples still want to share their special day with the people they love but they also want to run away somewhere exotic to tie the knot. It also allows them to stretch out their wedding day experience from just one day to several days. It allows them time to really enjoy the experience instead of just having the whole event go by in a flurry of activity, giving them very little time to sit down and just enjoy themselves.
The trend of having smaller weddings also plays a part in destination weddings. By planning to go somewhere other than home, it helps keep the guest list smaller as not everyone will be able to take a trip to go to a wedding. This helps the couple minimize the whole affair but still keep everyone's feelings intact.
