Giving to Charity With Your Wedding

Blog / Giving to Charity With Your Wedding

With all the hurricanes, tsunamis, and other disasters happening in the world, many brides are looking for ways to make their wedding day not only their big day but also a big days for charities. There are many ways to give to charity through your wedding and brides and wedding planners seem to becoming more and more conscious of that.
Finding a soup kitchen or other food bank might be a good way to use the leftovers from the reception. Many of these will have tight restrictions (such as the food may have to be repackaged) but you can work with the catering staff to ensure this is done. Be absolutely sure that no food spoilage has occurred. It's not charity if you're just giving them garbage.
The flowers from the ceremony and reception can also be given away to local nursing homes or hospitals to cheer the patients up. This is a great way to use flowers that otherwise may just end up in the garbage. And the patients will be so thankful that you have helped brighten their day!
For brides who can do it, some are donating their wedding dress to their church's thrift store or to women's shelters. Donating it to people who would never be able to afford such a dress can be a great feeling but due to the sentimental value of the wedding dress, many brides can't part with it and they shouldn't feel about that either.
There are now foundations such as the I Do Foundation. This organization will donate eight percent of the value of any gifts purchased through them that are on your registry. You can also ask guest to donate in lieu of a gift. Don't ask on your invitations though as it implies that you expect a gift just for inviting them. Instead, ask your friends and family to spread the word that that's what you would like done for your wedding.
You can also give a small donation to charity instead of handing out favours. Leave a little note at every guests placecard explaining the charity you have donated to.
These are just a few ideas to make your wedding day even more special!
