The wedding gowns of today sure have come a long way from the ball gown styles with puffy sleeves of twenty years ago.

The trend today is leaning toward silhouette dresses as they present a more slimming effect. The A-line dress is one type that is very popular. With graceful, clean lines these dresses are slimming on most figures. Bias-cut wedding gowns are also becoming very trendy as they follow the curves of the body but flare out at the hem. For those brides wanting to keep with the traditional look of the ball gown style, it is still possible to do this while keeping it modern. The ball gown dresses of weddings past all had basque waistlines (this is when the waistline dips into a V.) Today the ball gown dress has a waistline that is positioned just below, or right on, the natural waistline.

Necklines have also changed. Where all bridal gown necklines used to go right up onto the neck in a choker style, open necklines are now becoming more popular. This includes squared and rounded squared necklines. Off-shoulder dresses are also popular with the neckline stretching out to meet the tip of the shoulder.

The sleeves of dresses no longer include full lengths with wide upper arms and shoulders. The focus today is on short sleeves, cap sleeves, or sleeveless gowns. This keeps an elegant look while providing a light, summery look and feel for the bride.

Yes, the trends have come a long way. Brides today can still feel elegant and graceful in a timeless manner without worrying about huge, awkward dresses. Today's dresses are both beautiful and practical.
