Reception Music Options, Band Or DJ
Tags / Mother of the bride / Reception Music Options, Band Or DJ
One of the biggest wedding reception decisions that you will have to make is whether you want to have a live band perform, or hire a DJ. The fact of the matter is that both options have their own set of pros and cons. If you have ever been to a reception before, you've more than likely seen at least one or the other. And if you have been to a lot of receptions, you may even have seen both. This can be a huge advantage in the decision making process because first hand experience really can help make things easier. But even if you do not have this luxury, you can still make the best decision for your reception if you take your time and keep an open mind.
If you are having a formal style wedding live music is probably the way to go. This is the most popular option for weddings that have a traditional manner. On the other hand, if you are having a more modern or contemporary reception a DJ is often popular. But remember that these are by no means hard and fast rules. If you want a live band at a contemporary style reception go for it. It is your big day, and you deserve to have exactly what you want.
Generally speaking, most people do not have a big enough budget to hire both a live band and a DJ. You may have the resources, and if you do you may want to have both. But for most people, a decision on either is necessary. For this reason, it may be useful to know the pros and cons of each of the options.
For couples that are trying to save money, a DJ is usually the best option. In most cases they cost less than a live band. But just because a DJ's price is lower does not necessarily mean that you should hire them. There are many details that you must take into consideration outside of price.
The biggest advantage of hiring a DJ to work your reception is that they have a very large choice of songs that they can choose from. In addition to this, if any of the guests have any special request a DJ can usually meet these needs. Make sure that when you are speaking with potential DJ's that you talk about how big their collection is. You will want to make sure that they are capable of playing newer songs, as well as some old classics. This will help to ensure that all of your guests get to hear music that they like.
In most cases DJ's are perfect for informal receptions. But more and more over the last few years they have been working formal gigs as well. Even though DJ's at traditional, formal weddings has not fully caught on, it is definitely becoming more popular.
If a DJ is not right for you, another option is to hire a live band. While bands are most popular at traditional receptions, they can also make for a great time at a contemporary set up as well.
When searching for a live band, keep in mind that there are some that specialize in playing weddings. The main advantage of hiring one of these bands is that they will know exactly what to do. The experience factor definitely comes into play. But this does not mean that you have to hire a band that specializes. Any band can play live at a reception as long as they have the skills to get the audience onto the dance floor. You do not want to hire a live band that cannot get the guests involved.
Bands are also more interactive with the audience. Between songs they can talk and attempt to get the guests out onto the dance floor. This is one of the biggest advantages of hiring a live band over a DJ. Hiring a live band will generally cost a bit more money than hiring a DJ. Although this is not always the case, it usually holds true.
When it comes to taking breaks, DJ's are usually better than live bands. They can rest while the songs are playing, where as a live band will have to take some time off to catch their breath. If you are hiring a live band you may want to discuss reducing the amount of quiet time. A good way to do this is to try to arrange their breaks around other events, such as toasts, when everyone will be quiet anyway.
Before you hire anybody, make sure that you know exactly what you are getting. As far as price is concerned you will have to determine if you are being charged a flat rate or by the hour. In addition, make sure that you have an overtime rate worked out as well. You never know if your reception is going to run long; planning for this is essential. Also talk about what you are going to get as far as song selection and special requests is concerned. This is especially important if you are hiring a live band.
The decision of whether you want a DJ or live band at your reception can be a tricky one. In order to make the best decision, you will want to research both options carefully. Never settle for something that you are not sure on. Remember, the music will help to set the overall atmosphere of your reception.
