Hiring a wedding photographer may be one of the most important decisions that you will have to make during your wedding preparations. The good thing is that over the past couple of years this industry has really taken off. Photographers from all over the world have decided to go into this line of work because it is proven to be quite profitable, giving you more and more choice. But along with this comes a downside as well. Since the demand for wedding photographers is higher than ever before, some people that are not qualified are starting to market themselves in this area. If you make the mistake of hiring one of these people you may not get a professional. The majority of these wannabes are people that are simply looking for a bit of side cash, and only have minimal skills in this area.

The first step in hiring a quality wedding photographer is to start the search process from the beginning. The best way to find a wedding photographer is often by word of mouth. Ask recently married couples that you know about their photographer. If they were happy with them, they should be more than willing to give you his or her details. On the other hand, if their wedding photographer was not quite what they hoped for you will be able to avoid them at all costs.

Make sure that before you make any decision on a wedding photographer that you check out their portfolio. Many photographers will place their photos online so that you never have to leave home to make a decision. While this can be quite convenient, you must keep one very important thing in the back of your mind. Remember, it's likely that their portfolio only contains their best shots. Keep in mind that a couple of good photos do not necessarily mean that the photographer is right for you. Try to look at as many samples as possible in order to make an informed decision.

It's important that you know the experience level of each person that you are considering as a photographer. While you may have to pay a bit more for an experienced wedding photographer, but you should have a better chance of getting exactly what you want. If you are on a budget, you may want to opt for somebody with a little bit less wedding experience. Just make sure that if you are going to do this that you carefully check out their portfolio. Remember, everyone needs to start somewhere and you may just be able to find the right person for a fraction of the cost of a full time wedding photographer.

If you do not know a lot about photography it may be difficult for you to assess the portfolio of each wedding photographer. With a little bit of know how you should be able to do this without any problems. A few things to look for are clarity, lighting, and how sharp the images are. If you like the way the portfolio looks, you should like the photos that you end up with.

When it comes to price, try to get a solid estimate from any wedding photographer after telling them how many photos you think you are going to need. If you are not sure how many photos you want, ask different photographers what they suggest. From there, working out an estimate should be easy.

There are also a few odd details that you will want to make sure you discuss with any potential photographers. Ask them if they develop their own film, or if they outsource it to a third party. Generally speaking, the people that outsource end up with photos that are not quite as clear as you may want. This is not always the case, but it is something that you should take into consideration.

Knowing how many samples you have to choose from is also a good question to ask. Obviously the more samples you have, the better chance there is that you will find something exactly how you want it. But at the same time, more samples also mean more money.

If you think that you may be interested in getting more pictures at a later date, you will want to ask wedding photographers how long they will keep the negatives. This way if you need more pictures down the road you can easily get them. It may also be worth your time to purchase some negatives of your own or getting a backup of your photos on a CD. This will give you the ability to reprint them when you need to.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is your photographer has to be someone you are comfortable with. Talk to them about what you want, they should be willing to work with you on any ideas that you have and offer some of their own insight as well. If they already have their own thoughts on how your wedding photos should look and don't want to listen to yours, then it's probably best not to hire them. If they seem unenthusiastic then again it's probably best not to hire them. Try to find someone who truly cares about capturing your wedding day stills, not just someone looking for a paycheck.

So you think you've found the photographer for you? When you're ready, schedule one last meeting to go over all of the details. This will give you time to talk over everything, and have any last minute questions answered. This will help to give you piece of mind so you can relax, enjoy your wedding, and look great in the photos.
