If you want to write your own wedding vows you are not alone. This is becoming increasingly popular among couples from all over the world. But unfortunately, writing your own vows can sometimes be more difficult than expected. After all, your wedding vows are something that will be remembered by your spouse and guests for a long time. They are a way for you to communicate exactly how you feel about the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and you'll want to make sure that they are as good as possible, and that they come out how you are expecting.

Some people do not write their own wedding vows because they are afraid that they will make a mistake, and people will look badly on them. The fact of the matter is that you should not be scared of writing your own wedding vows. If you put in a bit of time, and think about what you write, you should end up with words that come out just right.

If you are still worried about writing your own wedding vows, listed below are ten steps that you can follow to lead you through the process. These steps may help to ensure that you end up with exactly what you want.

  • 1. The first step before you even start thinking about writing your own wedding vows is to get clearance from the officiant. Some religions may be against writing your own wedding vows, or some officiants may have a personal objection. Make sure that you know what you are allowed to do before you start writing. There is no point in writing your wedding vows, just to have to scrap them later on.
  • 2. Make sure that you and your fiancé are on the same page. If you are going to write your own wedding vows, make sure that they are going to do the same. Also, are you two going to write your wedding vows together? Or are you going to do so separately? These are all questions that need to be answered before you start.
  • 3. Just like a term paper, you will not want to start writing your wedding vows without an outline. By having an outline in place you will know what you need to write, as well as a direction that you want to follow. Your outline does not have to be perfect, just something to guide you through the process.
  • 4. Search online for examples of wedding vows. This will give you a good idea as to what you should write, as well as where to start. You may want to print out the wedding vow samples that you like best so that you can refer to them during the writing process. But remember, your wedding vows should be exactly that, make them yours by keeping them original. You do not want to copy what somebody else wrote just because it is good. Be original!
  • 5. Start the writing process by putting a rough draft together. This should give you basic idea of the direction you are going in, and is a great starting point. You should never expect to write perfect wedding vows the first time around.
  • 6. After you have your rough draft down on paper, you may want to incorporate some of the ideas that you found in step four. This will allow you to tie everything together with more concrete words.
  • 7. Work on writing a draft that you are completely happy with. This is the step where you take your words from rough draft form to near completion. You do not have to tie up every loose end during this stage of the writing process, but you will want to make some progress towards the end result. When you finally have something written that you are satisfied with, it will be much easier to go back and make minor changes as necessary.
  • 8. Put your final draft away for a couple of days. Do not look at it, not even once. After a couple of days take it out and reread it for any mistakes, and to check the content. You may find out that you do not like what you wrote, or that there are more mistakes than you initially thought.
  • 9. This step is not for everyone, but it may pertain to you. If you reread your wedding vows and do not like them, do not be afraid to scrap them and start from scratch. This may be tough to do after you put in so much work, but if you want your wedding vows to be perfect it is sometimes necessary. If you think that you can use some of what you wrote during the first draft keep it nearby. You may just need to tweak some things here and there.
  • 10. When everything is said and done, and you are comfortable with your end result, you may want to practice reading your wedding vows aloud. This is a good idea because sometimes when you hear yourself read something it may not sound right. It is better to catch this before the wedding, than while you are in front of your fiancé and hundreds of guests. Make sure that you can practice as many times as necessary for you to feel comfortable - practice makes perfect!

If you follow these 10 steps you should not have any problems writing the perfect wedding vows. It will probably take you a bit of time to write wedding vows. Avoid the unnecessary stress of attempting to write your wedding vows a day or two before the ceremony by giving yourself enough time. All in all, writing your own wedding vows can be a lot of fun, and will consist of words that can be remembered forever.
