The mother of the groom can sometimes feel left out of the wedding process. They are usually not as involved as the mother of the bride, but at the same time they want to make sure that they do more than just act as a statue. Even though the mother of the groom does not have a lot of major duties to fulfill, she can still get involved and do a few things that are important.

Quite possibly the most important thing that the mother of the groom can do is make the first contact with the parents of the bride. In other words, when the mother of the groom learns of the engagement, she can call the other set of parents and let them know just how happy they are. This can be as brief as a phone call, or as in depth as setting up a dinner for both sets of parents. Either way, this is an important step in the process of bringing the two families together. Additionally, it will mean a lot to the engaged couple as well. Everybody wants their parents to get along, and this is the first step to making this happen.

As the mother of the groom you may want to wait a bit before choosing your dress. The mother of the groom traditionally wears a dress that compliments the one that the mother of the bride is wearing. So if the mother of the bride is wearing a short dress, you too can wear a short dress. However, the mother of the groom should generally not wear the same color as the mother of the bride or the bridesmaids, to set you apart on the groom's side of the wedding.

It is traditionally the responsibility of the father and mother of the groom to be in charge of and host the rehearsal dinner. This does not have to be anything too extravagant if you do not want it to be. Anything from a simple backyard picnic to an upscale restaurant is acceptable. Remember to make sure that everyone who is going to be in the ceremony is also in attendance at the rehearsal.

At the beginning of a church wedding, the mother of the groom will be escorted down the aisle and will take a seat in the first pew on the right. In many cases, the groom will escort his mother down the aisle. During the ceremony, the mother of the groom may be in charge of a couple of different things depending on the set up. This includes tasks such as lighting the family candle.

If the reception has a receiving line, the mother of the groom usually stands in it to greet the guests. At the same time, she will introduce her friends and family to the bride's family. In most cases, the mother of the groom will stand between the bride and her mother.

As you can see the mother of the groom does have some tasks to take care of, before, during, and after the ceremony. Although not always a major player, her participation is important for a successful wedding.
