The Honor Attendant

Articles / / The Honor Attendant

The bride's honor attendant is her closest friend or family member that she wants at her side through the planning process. If she is not married, she will be called the Maid of Honor, whereas if she is married or has been married in the past, she will be referred to as the Matron of Honor. If the friend or member of your family closest to you just so happens to a guy, then it's perfectly fine to have a man of honor.

When searching for an honor attendant, remember to try to pick someone dependable. They are going to be doing a lot of work for you and your guests, and it is important for everything to run smoothly with as few problems as possible. There is nothing worse than choosing an honor attendant that's not up to the challenge. By doing this, he or she may end up giving up on you half way through everything. This will put you in a very bad position and one that no bride to be wants to deal with before a wedding.

You'll find that some people naturally lend themselves to being honor attendants, with best friends and sisters the usual favorites. One point to remember is the closer they live, the easier things will be on you. If your honor attendant lives close, she will be able to help out with all of the pre wedding details that have to be completed.

Traditionally, the honor attendant wore a dress similar in shade to the bride's, as well as a slightly different headpiece and flower arrangement to indicate her role. Nowadays it is much more popular for the honor attendant to be dressed similarly to the bridesmaids, especially in the case of a female honor attendant who often acts as chief bridesmaid. With a man of honor this is can be a bit more difficult, but you can find ways to coordinate with the bridesmaids, for example, the color of his boutonniere can match that of the bridesmaids dresses.

The honor attendant is responsible for a lot of pre wedding details. With their help, you should be able to get everything completed in a timely manner. One way that an honor attendant is sure to help is when you are picking out your wedding day attire. It is always nice to have somebody to offer advice, and an honor attendant is perfect for this. In addition, the honor attendant will also help to choose the dresses for the bridesmaids as well. Again, they will lend useful insight to the decision making process so that you are not left alone. To take this a step further, they also help to coordinate the bridesmaids. This includes everything from fittings for dresses, to making sure each bridesmaid knows what tasks they are supposed to be in charge of.

The honor attendant usually plans and hosts the bridal shower. This is one of the most fun parts of the wedding build up, so let your honor attendant take over and plan whatever she has in mind.

The honor attendant's responsibilities extend to the day of the wedding itself. First and foremost, they will get in touch with the best man in order to ensure that all of the details are going as planned. The best man is to the groom, what an honor attendant is to a bride.

During the ceremony, the honor attendant will be in charge of holding the groom's ring, and also holding the bride's bouquet. The honor attendant also traditionally holds back the bride's veil for the ever-popular kiss!

But the honor attendant is not done just yet. At the reception she also has a few duties to fulfill as well. They will be in charge of making a toast, and overseeing signing of the guest book.

Overall, the honor attendant is a very important part of every wedding. Generally speaking, they act as a top assistant to the bride. Taking on the responsibility of being an honor attendant is not something to be taken lightly. There are many fine details that go along with it and while the responsibilities of the honor attendant may have changed over the years, they are still an integral part of both the wedding preparations and the ceremony itself.
