Hiring a DJ for their wedding reception is something that a lot of couples opt for. This is an excellent alternative to a live band and can be a great way to bring a variety of music to the party, without having to pay a large amount of money. During the planning stages of your wedding, if you are hiring a DJ you will need to put in a little bit of time to ensure that you make the right decision. There are a lot of DJ's available, and you will want to make sure that you choose the one that is best for your venue, guests, and overall theme.
Hiring a DJ for a wedding is easier than hiring a live band because you will be able to find a larger pool to choose from. If you know a friend or family member that has recently been married you may want to ask them which DJ they used at their reception. If they can give a good referral, you may be able to cut out many of the more time consuming steps. Another great way to get DJ referrals is by getting in touch with the local clubs in your area. All of them have DJ's that come in on a regular basis, and they may be able to give you their contact information and a run down on what they can offer.
If you have the opportunity to see a DJ in person before you hire them you will want to do so. This will give you a good idea as to how they interact with the audience, as well as what type of music they are capable of playing. Anytime you can see somebody in action try to do it. It is the best way to get a complete and total feel for what they do; it is even better than a great referral.
When speaking with DJ's ask them if they can supply any references or testimonials. Knowing that they have pleased other people in the past will help to put your mind to rest when making a final decision. If a DJ cannot give you a couple of past clients to speak with, you will want to proceed with caution. Even though this is not necessarily a deal breaker, it should open your eyes.
Explain what you are envisioning, and also ask for suggestions. You will want to hire a DJ that is excited about your ideas, but can also suggest a few of their own as well. If you come across somebody that wants to do the job their way, and their way only, simply move on. There are too many options available to settle for somebody that in not prepared to work with you.
Make sure that you give every DJ you talk to explicit details about the venue. Tell them how much space you have to offer, and make sure that they area comfortable working in it. In addition, determine if they will need any help getting their equipment to the designated space.
Finally, find out how much each DJ charges. You will run into some that want to give you an hourly rate, as well as others who charge a flat fee. Either way, make sure you have an idea of your total cost. Generally speaking, a DJ will cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000.
By hiring a wedding DJ that is perfect for your situation, you will be treating yourself and your guests to a great time.
