If you have found a photographer for your wedding, they'll need to know what kind of photos you want taking. While they'll probably make suggestions on which shots to take, and which ones to pass on, a good photographer will want some input from you and in particular they will to know if you want any specific shots taking. Remember, you have the option of getting photos before, during, and after both the ceremony and reception, and as you will be paying for the photos, you should think about how to make the most of your money. Making a decision as to what types of photos you want is a big choice. This is something that you need to agree upon up front with your photographer so that they know exactly what you want. After all, if you don't tell them what you want you may end up missing out on something.

Before the ceremony photos are ones that you may or may not want to have taken. The reason that a lot of people pass up on this is because they do not want to have a photographer following them around as they are getting ready. If you are worried about this, one option that you can look into is having a friend take some photos instead. Even though they may not turn out as good as they would with a professional, you will at least get some behind the scene shots that you can cherish forever.

One of the best photos to get before the ceremony is one of your clothes hanging in the closet. This may seem a bit boring, but these photos have a way of brining back memories of what you felt like before everything got underway. A simple shot or two will do; there is no reason to take an overabundance of photos of your clothes!

For the bride, photos of having their hair and makeup done can make for keepsakes. It may also be something nice to show your husband in the future. Since he will not get to see you during this time, you can sit down over the photos and explain to him what was happening. This can be a great way to relive the wedding a couple of weeks afterwards.

Mirror shots are overlooked sometimes, but can make for great photos. These are shots that show the bride or groom checking themselves in the mirror one last time before they get started. In these shots the bride or groom is fully clothed in their wedding attire.

Also, try to order some interactive pre ceremony shots. Photos of the bride talking to her mother, or the groom and the best man are nice to have; anything that shows a bit of communication between people in the wedding party. Again, you do not have to get out of control, but it is always nice to have photos of people talking. Down the line you may look at those photos and remember what you were talking about.

At the actual ceremony, photos are even more important. The first one that you will want to make sure that you get is one of the guests streaming into the ceremony venue.

Getting a shot or two of the flower girl walking down the aisle is also an adorable keepsake. Your photographer should be able to position themselves so that they can get at great shot of the flower girl coming towards them.

Of course one of the most important photos is of the bride coming down the aisle. This is one of the main highlights of any wedding, and one that you will want to remember forever. As this moment is so important and so special, you may want to urge your photographer to try and get shots from a couple of different angles.

Why not include the exchange of the rings and the famous kiss? For these photos, ask your photographer if they can zoom in a bit. This makes for a particularly good picture if your photographer can get close enough.

The last shot that you will want to get at the ceremony is the couple walking the aisle together after everything is said and done. Your photographer will surely be able to capture the atmosphere by getting a shot of those big smiles!

We're not done yet - some of the best shots of the day can come at the reception. You may want to start out by getting some photos of you and your partner coming into the reception hand in hand. From there, receiving line photos are also nice to have because it shows a lot of the guests as well as the parents of both the bride and groom. Many shots can be had of the receiving line in big weddings, because guests will be pouring in one after the next.

Action shots at the reception are great. Your photographer should be able to capture the mood by getting pictures such as dancing, guest interaction, and the couple sharing the wedding cake. Having photos taken of people as they are giving toasts can also make for timeless mementos.

As the bride and groom leave the reception, a couple of pictures of them heading to the getaway car and driving away are always nice. These photos will more than likely be the last ones that are taken.

The types of photos that you get are completely up to you and your photographer. It may be best to give them suggestions up front, while also telling them to use their discretion as the events unfold. As long as everyone is on the same page you will end up with photos to cherish forever!
