Congratulations, you've found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with - it's definitely time to celebrate! An engagement party should be a lot of fun. But with that being said, engagement parties can be a bit more complicated than they may sound. Sure, you can just throw an engagement party together, but you may want to do a bit of planning first. With that said, as long as you stay on track from the beginning you should not have any issues as the process unwinds.

First of all, you need to know that an engagement party is not an absolute must. Is an engagement party fun? Sure is! But at the same time, you do not need to have an engagement party. They can cost a lot of money, and may be a burden on you and your family. So as soon as you get engaged you may want to make the decision as to whether or not you are going to have a party. Getting this decision out of the way early on will go a long way in ensuring that you are on track from the start of things.

When trying to decide if you are going to have an engagement party, there are some things that you will need to take into mind. Just like anything else, there are many pros and cons of having an engagement party.

The biggest pro of an engagement party is that you will be able to spend quality time with your family and friends. This will give everybody the chance to celebrate and have a good time. After all, getting engaged is a huge step in anybody's life. You will want to make sure that you cherish this moment because you only get to experience it one time. And what better way to do this than by having a party where everybody can get together and live it up for a few hours.

Another benefit of having an engagement party is that both families will have a good chance to introduce themselves (if they have not already) and get to know one another. Now that everybody is going to be in the same family this is a very important step in the process. In fact, for some couples this is the main reason to have an engagement party. It gives everybody the chance to socialize so that they can move forward with the rest of the planning process without any problems.

On the other side of things there are some cons that go along with having an engagement party. First off, you should only invite people to your engagement party that you will invite to your wedding. This means that you will have to get started early on with your guest list. For some people this is not a problem, but others may not know how big a wedding that they want at this early stage. If you are worried that you may not be able to invite a lot of people to your wedding, it may be best to keep your engagement party to close family and friends; those who you are 100 percent sure to invite.

Another major downfall of an engagement party is that it can cost a bit of money. Even if your parents are paying for the party, costs can soon build up. If you are not willing to spend the money you can simply pass on a big party and just have a smaller celebration with those closest to you. This will allow you to save for other areas of your wedding that may be more important to you.

When it comes to planning an engagement party there is a lot of details to consider. One of the biggest details has to do with who is going to host the party. Traditionally, the parents of the bride host the engagement party. But with that being said this is no longer a rule that is followed by everybody. The fact of the matter is that anybody else can host the party; the groom's parents, other friends and family, even the newly engaged couple themselves, it does not have to be the bride's parents.

Many couples also get stuck on where they should have their engagement party. This depends greatly on the type of budget you are on, as well as what you are interested in doing. Some couples like to have a formal affair where they send out invitations. But on the other hand, this is not a necessity. You may just want to have your engagement party at an informal restaurant where everybody can get together for food and drinks.

As far as guests are concerned, this is something that you will have to think long and hard about. You will definitely want to make sure that both families are present, but after that things get a bit less clear. As a general rule of thumb you should not invite anybody who you will not invite to the wedding.

Finally, never expect to receive gifts at your engagement party. Even though you probably will, this is not something that you should be counting on.

You do not have to follow in the footsteps of others. If you do not want to have an engagement party there is nothing wrong with this. But overall, an engagement party can be a lot of fun. There are many benefits that come along with having an engagement party. As long as you plan everything you should not run into any problems as far as the engagement party is concerned.
