Best Man Speech Advice

The best man speech! This is one of the most anticipated moments of any wedding. But if you are the best man you may not be looking forward to it quite as much. Not because giving the best man speech is hard to do, but there are a lot of details that go into it. As the best man you not only have to write the speech in advance to the wedding, but you also have to deliver it with poise in front of a large audience. The good thing is that thousands of people deliver speeches every year at weddings, and there is really not much to it.
If you are the best man and need to write a speech you may be having a hard time deciding where to get started. After all, this can be a daunting task if you have never had to deliver a speech in public before. The best thing to do in order to ensure that you are on track from the beginning is to give yourself plenty of time to work. In other words, you do not want to start writing your speech shortly before the wedding. This will put you under the gun, and you may end up with a speech that is not your best. So make sure that you start writing your best man speech at least a month in advance. You may even want to leave yourself more time than that if you think that you may have trouble.
Before you actually start the writing process, you will want to get an outline in place. This will allow you to have a good jumping off point. During the outline process you will want to ask yourself several questions. How well do you know the bride and groom? Why were you chosen to be the best man? Are you a friend of the groom or a relative? How did the bride and groom meet? These are only a few examples of the questions that you should ask yourself during the outline process. The key to this part of the writing process is getting a basis for what you want to get across to the audience.
From there, you will want to begin the actual writing process. For some people the writing process comes very quickly. All of their thoughts begin to come together, and after one draft they have something that they can work with. But on the other side of things there are some people that are not great writers. They have a hard time putting words onto paper that make sense. But the good thing is that regardless of what group you fall into, if you take your time you will end up with a good end result.
Just like any good term paper, a best man speech has three key parts to it. First off, you will want to start out with the introduction. This part of your speech will let people know who you are, and what your relationship is to the groom. This can be done in a number of different ways so experiment when you are writing. From there, the body of your speech could include a funny anecdote from the past, or something that will allow the audience to feel closer to the bride and groom. Finally, finish up with a toast of good luck or something similar.
Now that you know that you need three distinct sections, you can write down different ideas for each one. As you start to mold these ideas you will soon see that your best man speech is coming into view. When you finally think that you have a good end result, put it in a drawer for a day or so, and then get it back out. At this time you will be able to review it to catch any mistakes that may have been made.
Now when the big day finally arrives you will be ready to go. But when giving your best man speech you will not want to read directly from your draft, or sound like you have memorized the entire thing word for word. This can sometimes be difficult to do, but if you practice the speech in advance you will not have any problems. If you start to get nervous and lose your train of thought, just think back to the start of your speech and move forward. Remember, everybody is going to be thrilled to hear you talk; there is not much that you could do to mess things up.
But, there are a few things that you will not want to do. Although it may be tempting, do not drink too much before you have to give your best man speech, you don't want to find yourself slurring your words and forgetting what you are supposed to say. There will be plenty of time to drink after your speech, so try to exercise a bit of restraint.
Also, you never want to include any jokes in your speech that may offend somebody else. You will need to avoid this at all costs. There really is no good that can come from cracking an inappropriate joke on the bride, groom, or anybody else in the room.
The best man's speech is one of the most anticipated moments at any wedding reception. If you are lucky enough to be the best man in a wedding you should take great pride in it. Put some time into your speech so that everybody in attendance can remember your words for years to come.
