The Best Man's Duties
Articles / / The Best Man's Duties
The best man is to the groom, what the honor attendant is to the bride. He is he person that is going to act as an assistant to the groom. When choosing your best man you need to remember that dependability and reliability are the most important things. Being that there are a lot of details that need to be taken care of, someone who is anything less than on the ball may end up causing issues down the line. The majority of groom's choose a best friend or a close relative to be their best man. In most cases, if a relative is chosen it is usually a brother or occasionally the father.
Before the actual day of the wedding, the best man already gets quite the workout. Starting off with the fun stuff, the best man is in charge of planning the bachelor party for the groom. In the past it was thought that these were to celebrate one last night of single life. And even though this still holds true, it is not quite the same as it is in today's day and age. More and more grooms are requesting that their best man throw them a more laid back party. Things such as trips to play golf or a day at a baseball game are becoming more and more popular.
Always the groom's trusty aide, the best man is in charge of helping select the formal wear that will be worn by the groomsmen at the ceremony. In addition, he will also attend formal wear fittings in order to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch.
Another key pre wedding area that the best man takes care of is travel arrangements. Traditionally he will be in charge of confirming the honeymoon, as well as making sure that the groom has everything that he needs. This can include things such as reservations, plane tickets, etc. Although it can be useful for the best man to help out in this area, nowadays it is rarely required. Generally speaking, all of these details can be taken care of by the bride and groom without any issues at all.
The best man is also in charge of travel arrangements for out of town guests. If you are not having a big wedding this may not be a problem. But for couples that are getting married out of town, this is one of the most important duties that a best man will undertake. He will have to coordinate who is staying where, and also make reservations for them.
And as a catchall, the best man is also responsible for running any errands that need to be taken care of. You never know when something is going to pop up, and having a best man that can handle adversity will make everything that much easier.
On the actual wedding day the best man will often be kept very busy. His first order of business is to get up on time and make sure that the rest of the party, including the groom, is up and moving as well. From there, he will coordinate with the groom and groomsmen to ensure that everybody gets changed into the proper attire, and is ready to go.
One of the most important things that the best man should to take care of the bride's ring, keeping it in a secure place.
As the ceremony approaches, the best man will be responsible for keeping the groom calm while also making sure that the groomsmen know what they are supposed to do. These are the last steps that the best man takes before the actual ceremony gets underway.
At the reception, the best man will give the first toast of the event. From there, he will dance with the bride as well as the honor attendant.
Finally, when all is said and done the best man will help the bride and groom exit the reception and head out. The next day he is responsible for making sure that any rented formal wear is taken back to the proper location.
Perhaps the best man should be referred to as the 'busiest man'. He takes on the vital role of helping the groom prepare for the ceremony, and carries out a lot of duties on the big day.
